Josh Davis followed his knack for numbers down a career path that included a master’s degree in accounting, CPA certification and a job right out of college with a respected firm.
Davis began his career as an auditor in public accounting but was ready to change course when an exciting opportunity arose at EquipmentShare.
"While public accounting offered me great experience, I was ready to move past the intense grind of the busy season into a more exciting role," Davis said.
In August 2022, he decided to switch to the private sector and accept a job as a senior accountant at EquipmentShare, a nationwide construction equipment rental and technology company based in Columbia, Missouri.
“EquipmentShare is growing fast, which means our accounting department is growing,” Davis said. “If you’re looking for challenging, fulfilling work with a good blend of work-life balance that you might not find as a public accountant, EquipmentShare is a great place to consider.”
EquipmentShare has grown to include rental, retail, technology development and manufacturing, and it has a variety of subsidiary and affiliate companies. That means it needs a nimble accounting team that can keep up with its evolving pursuits. It’s looking for senior accountants and assistant controllers who like to tackle new challenges rather than repeating the same tasks day after day.
“Here, you’re contributing to the success of the company,” said Jennifer Heim, EquipmentShare’s corporate controller. “You’re invested in helping this company grow, and you get to be a part of that experience.”
Davis mainly focuses on financial reporting. He reviews and analyzes the company’s financial numbers and researches how Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) applies to the transactions and topics being evaluated. Based on that information, he writes quarterly and annual reports for EquipmentShare leaders, external auditors and regulatory agencies.
“He can take a project, think through it independently, ask a couple of questions and then he’s off to work,” Heim said of Davis. “Being able to work independently and perform accounting research is really helpful.”
Davis’ workload is steady throughout the year, so he doesn’t have to sacrifice quality time with his wife and their pet goldendoodle, Berkley, nor miss a minute of another postseason run by his beloved Kansas City Chiefs during the winter months.
EquipmentShare’s employee perks include monthly gift cards for family dinner nights, wellness bonuses and paid time off for volunteering in the community. Davis and many of his accounting teammates work at corporate headquarters, where employees get free breakfast and lunch prepared by the culinary team as well as a stocked snack and coffee bar. There is a state-of-the-art gym on-site that offers a variety of fitness classes led by a professional trainer.
“EquipmentShare is very different from what you would expect to see in Columbia,” Davis said. “It’s an extremely fast-growing, dynamic company. That’s one of the main reasons I enjoy working here. It’s very fast-paced, very challenging and the work is rewarding.”
EquipmentShare is growing nationwide, and we’re on the lookout for team members in all departments, including accounting. Check out our job openings.
