Casey Flanagan got his start in the equipment rental business as a service technician. When a piece of equipment would go down with an engine problem, it often required an expensive visit from one of the OEM dealership’s mechanics — they were the only ones with the diagnostic software to sort out the problem.
Now, Flanagan is the general manager of EquipmentShare’s branch in Pasadena, Texas, and he’s grateful his service team has in-house access to the latest diagnostic tools and training.
“Having the equipment and training for the technicians is vital and it’s cost-effective, because when you have machines down because of something as simple as needing to plug a computer into them to tell you what’s wrong, that costs you a lot of downtime and money,” Flanagan said.
EquipmentShare is committed to giving its service techs the tools they need to succeed. That commitment was on display recently in Pasadena. An excavator, telehandler and two boom lifts — worth a combined $500,000 — went down. The branch wasn’t able to get the engine manufacturer’s recently updated diagnostic software for its Diesel laptops.
A call to EquipmentShare’s technical training experts — Pete Bradstreet and Scott Blakeway — put the gears in motion for a solution.
Bradstreet and Blakeway had the new software. They visited the Pasadena branch, updated the laptops and joined the service team in the rental yard to check out the four downed machines. Within a few hours, the problems were diagnosed and the replacement parts were ordered. The equipment was back in business a couple days later.
“We offer more training than a lot of other rental companies do, and we’ve got tons and tons more software and OEM diagnostic tools compared to most rental companies,” Blakeway said. “We’re at a dealership level.”
